English Translation: Gaoxiong harbor used to be called Takao. It was already the largest harbor for both fishing and commercial use in Fengshan county during Qing dynasty. Because of the Treaty of Tientsin signed in 1863, Takao officially opened as a commercial harbor to other countries and soon turned to be the major international harbor on the island. However, Qing government built artilleries and put rocks in waterways during the Sino–French War. The harbor was clogged until Japanese government started renovating it during the period of Japanese rule in Taiwan. Based on a official report of Takao harbor, the government started the renovation in 1906. After railroads connected Keelung and Takao in 1908, the renovation project was modified several times, making Keelung harbor the largest one in south. Bean cakes are made of yellow beans remnants after oil is extracted. They can be used as fertilizer or forage (NCL).
