Dong Bangda, a high official at the court of the Qianlong emperor (1736-95), was responsible, among other things, for cataloguing the imperial collection of paintings. His own works follow the orthodox guidelines established by his learned predecessors, but he added naturalistic touches, and his dry brushwork has strong and vibrant rhythms.
