The Burmese ritual is unique in its integration of non-Buddhist local rites with Buddhist practices. Shin-pyu can be held throughout the year, but in recent times, in order to coordinate with the school academic schedule, the ceremony and ordination process often takes place during long holidays. Burmese Shin-pyu ceremonies are usually organized and sponsored by a patron of high economic or social status in the village. They take responsibility for all relevant rituals and financial arrangements, and for inviting all of the boys in the village or town who have not been ordained to participate in the novitiation. The families of the boys all join in the ceremonies. This is a grand occasion in the village where human, economic, social, and cultural capital are fully deployed. First, a boy is not considered a Buddhist before the novitiation or prior to being sponsored by an adult to undergo the ceremony; and secondly, it is considered a taboo if parents die before providing the means for their child to participate in the Shin-pyu ceremony.  The Shin-pyu ceremony is often more elaborate than an adult’s official ordination as bhikkhu or a wedding celebration. Burmese families place great importance on the Shin-pyu.
