[英文]Elder, men, and boy with flags. The flag says Neiwen village is pacified and its inhabitants are good subjects@ 内文社 帰化 良民. Neiwen was in Gaoxiong prefecture, Chaozhou county 潮州郡 under Japanese rule in the 1930s. These flags may be remnants of the Japanese 1874 expedition to Taiwan. At the time, Japanese troops distributed flags to allies to separate them from villages marked for punitive attacks. According to H. Suzuki, the flags signify surrender during the Qing dynasty, but it is not clear to whom the Neiwen residents surrendered; both standing men are considered @men of great influence in southern Taiwan@ (H. Suzuki, p. 83).
