The scene of a sampan or fishing boat raising its sail and heading out to sea was thus often used to convey the lifestyle of many residents of Taiwan, and commonly appeared as a visual symbol in contemporary propaganda materials. For instance, the publicity postcards for such varied activities as $Taiwan Mutual-Progress Fair,$ and $Commemoration of the Itinerary of Prince Hirohito in Taiwan,$ all used pictures of sampans or fishing boats to emphasize the features of Taiwan$s island environment@ (Yao 2006, p. 67).
