"「朝貢」二字，就字面上來說，意為藩屬國來朝，進獻地方特產，以示對宗主國的臣服。中國朝貢制度的歷史相當悠久，直至清代為止，不斷有許多國家前往中國朝貢，形成古代亞洲國際外交體系的重要一環。在此一制度下，宗主國藉由「萬方來朝」的氛圍，鞏固其君主對國內統治的正當性與國際上的地位，藩屬國則因為能從宗主國獲得相較於貢物數倍乃至數十倍價值的賞賜，遂產生很大的經濟誘因，雙方可謂各取所需。\n\n<br>", "<div>清代做為中國最後一個王朝，朝貢制度的發展也到了十分成熟的階段。各國需依照進貢週期派來貢使，行走規定的路線，對於准許入境與前往京城的人數，也有所限制。貢使進入中國境內，即刻由地方大員上奏，到京城後，進獻表文與貢品，領取賞賜。</div><div>貢品雖然是以藩屬國當地的特產與工藝品為主，但有時也會有例外，例如本件由清代著名宮廷畫家郎世寧繪製的「果然獸」，可能是由交趾（今越南）進貢原產於印度洋馬達加斯加島的環尾狐猴。貢使領賞後，由原路返回本國，在前往京城與回程途中，皆有伴送官相隨，照料食宿，給予馬匹、車、船等交通工具，並派兵護送。\n\n</div>", Mackay）稱它是北部最好的海港。早年西班牙、荷蘭時代都以此為治台基地。清朝時期由於淡水河系的便捷，基隆只是淡水的副港，但清末，因淡水港逐漸淤塞，劉銘傳注意到基隆潛力而大力建設，計畫將港灣形勢優越，但交通不便的基隆作為臺灣北部的主要門戶，以基隆為臺灣鐵路起點、著手興築港口設施，並積極整頓臺灣第一座官方煤礦，卻因甲午戰爭爆發而未能完全實行。到了日本統治時代，1903年起，終於取代淡水成為北臺灣的大門，做為全臺首要對外交通門戶，大力進行港口興築與市區建設，使基隆崛起成為臺灣主要都市之一。",
