Zhuoshui River covers a vast area of the island and is famous for having\nthe longest length and greatest amount of silt in Taiwan. Many of the first\nsettlers in Taiwan utilized its waters for irrigation and its fertile alluvial\nsoil has been of significant importance to the agricultural development of the\narea, allowing locals to harvest crops, thus Zhuoshui River is also referred to\nas “Mother River”. The construction of the Sun-Moon Lake Hydropower Plant\nwas the largest hydraulic power project of this time period and the Taiwan Power Stock Company  was founded in 1919 to raise the required\ncapital. The First Sun-Moon Lake Hydropower Plant is therefore also known as\n“The Mother of Taiwan Power Company”. This exhibition displays archives and\nphotos of the Sun Moon Lake area extending to the Wushe Reservoir, presenting\nthe Zhuoshui River Hydropower Plant— a project of paramount importance in the\nhistory and evolution of Taiwan’s hydropower. However, it has also caused\nproblems. Some of them are as follows:\n\n  \n\n A.The rising riverbed on the upper course of the Zhuoshui River endangers\nresidents and farmland on both sides: Is this caused by the long-standing silt resulted\nfrom Wanda Hydropower Plant’s flood discharge or is this due to water and soil\ndegradation caused by land use?\n\n  \n\n B. Serious siltation in Wushe Reservoir (Wanda\nReservoir ) and Wujie Dam: Zhuoshui River contains a high amount of silt.
