Transcending language and cultural boundaries, appealing immediately to the eye and ear, to the literate and illiterate, audiovisual documents have transformed society by becoming a permanent complement to the traditional written record.

However, they are extremely vulnerable and it is estimated that we have no more than 10 to 15 years left to transfer audiovisual records to digital to prevent their loss. Much of the world's audiovisual heritage has already been irrevocably lost through neglect, destruction, decay and the lack of resources, skills, and structures to preserve them, thus impoverishing the memory of mankind. The theme of this exhibition is “Beautiful Sound Made by Fellow Hakka”, which presented a series of Hakka music audio-visual materials that have been released, or been fully presented, in hope of drawing attention of the academic peers and general public to the audio-visual archives, to further popularize our use of audio-visual heritage, deepen our understanding of the past, and to amplify our actions for the present and future.

The curatorial concept of this exhibition includes several aspects: firstly, the curatorial team hopes to develop the audience's understanding and imagination of Taiwan Hakka music. Hakka music is not only the music that is spoken in Hakka languages, or music that just exists for Hakka people, it can also be the music provided by the Hakka for people living in this land, as well as music that was made and created from unique memories of being or encountering Hakka. We would like to present and summon multiple experiences, stories and memories about Hakka music through the selection and arrangement of exhibits.

Secondly, we hope to outline the developmental history of Hakka music through a series of exhibits including 78-rpm records of the “Cantonese Tea Songs”, “Cantonese Pop Songs”, as well as the “Cantonese Songs” from literature and newspapers in the late Qing Dynasty, and during the Japanese colonial period, to the Hakka mountain ditties of post-war “Folk Song Collected Movement” and “Hakka Folk Song Competition”, and to the contemporary compositions of Hakka music in the millennium, witnessing how Hakka music continues to be classified and imagined in different ways in Taiwan, emphasising the differences of the cultural production context of Hakka music in different processes. This is another key point that the exhibition would like to acknowledge.

Also, we would like to present the history of the preservation of audio-visual archives, from shellac records, reel-to-reel tapes, to digital recordings, through the heritage of Hakka music. Although we integrated the timeline and different forms of expression as a conceptual tool to the exhibitions, we had no intention of portraying the development of Hakka music as a process \"from tradition to modernity\", or \"from folklore to fine art\". On the contrary, the curatorial team hopes that viewers can think about the structural factors that shape the institutionalization of Hakka music and the coexistence of different aesthetics through the exhibits.

In this exhibition, in addition to presenting precious recordings rarely made public in the past by well-known Hakka musicians, such as Sun-sun, a famous singer of Columbia Record Company during the Japanese Colonial Period, and LAI Bi-Xia, a national treasure inheritor of Hakka folk songs, lesser-known recordings of important historical moments of the past are also presented. Through a series of exhibits, we hope the viewer can enjoy the beautiful voices and figures of the Hakka people of Taiwanese society’s annual rituals, daily entertainment, folklore revitalisation, and artistic concepts. The music they recorded included guchui yue, beiguan, and reformed tea-picking operas. Despite the fact that the term “Hakka” wasn’t widely used as a social category in Taiwan before the end of World War II, and that the local Hakka people often referred themselves as “Hak-ngin” (people who speak Hak language) rather than “the Hakka”, many genres of Hakka music that we are familiar with today, had become the materials used by international and local record companies for their productions at the time. These extremely precious and diverse audio materials not only became indispensable historical materials for contemporary scholars to understand the evolvement of Hakka music, they also showed the vigorous development and the symbiotic relationship among diverse Taiwanese folk cultures during the Japanese colonial period. , "thumbURI":
