Pigs are the most prevalent and traditional measure of wealth in the Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu. There are specific standards for evaluating pig’s worth, such as the number loops in its tusks. Pigs can be used as payment for dowry, for fines and penalties, to promote one’s status, or as payment for ritualistic knowledge, and as a premium for specialized carvings.
