拼板舟 Yami (Tao) Fishing Boat
For the Yami(Tao) people fishing boats are used for fishing and means of transportation to and from other villages for visiting or to participate in celebrations. In addition, it is an identification of a person’s status. The colour use done the boat is mainly red, white and black. Traditionally the red dye comes from the red soil on the mountain, the white dye comes from the shell ash, and the black dye comes from the charcoal on the bottom of the pot. Boats that are painted in these three colours and decorated with carvings must go through the new boat launching ceremony, while boats without any decoration (white boats)do not. In general, the fishing boats are categorized into two sizes. A boat that sits one, two or three people is deemed a small boat, and is made from 21 wooden planks. A big boat is one that sits six, eight, or ten people, and is made from 27 wooden planks. The wooden planks come from different trees, according to where on the boat it is used. For instance, stronger tree will be used for the keel while light and sturdy tree will be used on the top part of the boat.
