臺灣原住民族飲食習慣多取自周遭環境大自然之給予，相關食器的製作也由自然萬物中取得原料製作。阿美族與卑南族湯匙分別製作自竹與木等材料，強調使用上之實用性質；而另一件魯凱木匙則具有精美的人型雕刻，在該族群中為具有貴族身分方可使用之物件，反映出魯凱族群社會階層的樣貌。
