4. The Respected Hakka
In their explorations of the Hakka 客家 origins, dialects, as well as social and cultural characteristics, Western missionaries introduced the term for "Hakka" to the Western world, lending the formerly neutral term a positive connotation as a Han ethnicity. The Hakka 客家 label gradually became accepted by Hakka intellectuals as a method of self-identification.
