3. The Word ‘Kè’ is Now ‘Hakka’
Western missionaries who arrived in China after the mid-19th century referred to speakers of Hakka dialects as “the Hakka" according to the pronunciation in the local dialect, which is transcribed in Han characters as 客家. This formally linked the term Hakka with kèjia.
As a result, the three major ethnic groups within the Guangdong area were categorized according to dialect as the "Punti (本地)," the Hakka (客家)," and the "Hoklo (福佬)." And the formerly pejorative connotations of "Hakka" was restored to a neutral term of ethnic classification.
