[英文]SAVAGE HOUSES OF TAIYARU TRIBE, FORMOSA
[英文]The letter on the back of this card appears to be from a businessman to his wife. He mentions the fawning behavior of Japanese officials of the highest rank, a feature of Western visits to Japanese-governed Taiwan that was noted by other travelers. Also noteworthy is the favorable comparison of the mountains to the sweltering city of Taipei, recalling both the ethos of colonial hill station in tropical colonies. This postcard, though photographed by Mori Ushinosuke in black and white as a document of Atayal residence patterns, building methods, and architecture, the writer appears to be illustrating the beautiful mountain scenery for his correspondent with this color lithograph. 森丑之助係1903年二月所攝,泰雅族的屈尺群,文獻或作馬來番,散居於新店溪上游烏來鄉一帶,牆壁用橫置木頭堆疊而成,是此區域原住民建築的風格。 English Translation: Mori Ushinosuke took this picture in February in 1903. Taiyaru tribe of Atayal people, also known as Mala Fan 马来番, scatters near Wulai. Walls of their houses are made of wood piles, a custom of the architecture of those indigenous people (NCL).
