The birth of a new life is universally celebrated across ethnic groups, communities, and families, each having its welcoming traditions. In Rukai communities, the task of weaving cradles for newborns falls to the older women, and the quality of the weaving is traditionally a measure of the women’s skills. The cradles are designed with a double-layered, half-cocoon-like structure: a sturdy outer layer made of bamboo or rattan and a gentle inner layer woven with shell flower leaves to cradle the newborn’s skin.
