[英文]Orchid Island men prepare for an outing
[英文]Jonathan Dever has noted that the three standing men in this photo are also pictured in wa0323, in nearly the same pose. In wa0323, however, three women are pictured in the foreground, and more people are in the background. This Taisho company postcard was published in Wakayama, while wa0323, a Katsuyama-company card published in Taipei, also appeared in the Bureau of Aborigine Affairs newsletter _Riban no tomo_ and the 1935 Taiwan Exposition souvenir book _Taiwan Bankai Tenbo_. It is likely that Segawa Kokichi took multiple exposures in the same setting and sold this image to Taisho and wa0323 to Katsuyama (who was closely connected to the Bureau of Aborigine Affairs). In the early 21st century, this postcard was also reproduced under the @Taiwan Historical Postcards Series@ imprint, with the Japanese caption cropped off. The titles and captions on the back of the card are bilingual: @達悟族的男子/The Ta$u Man/男子以長条布繫腰部陰部, 這重繫腰方式在台湾僅見於達悟民族/Hunters in their lifetime. All men wear loincloths; in Taiwan this manner of girding is unique to the Ta’u.@
