[英文]A view of Keelung Harbour (one of the eight famous sights), Formosa
[英文]@Originally named Chicken Cage,... Jilong Harbor was opened as a commercial port in 1863. Later in 1875, the harbor, whose name was considered inelegant, was renamed Jilong, which in Chinese denotes prosperity and fruitfulness....In 1899, the first phase of the harbor expansion project was launched and completed in July, 1906. The completion of this project enabled ships of over 3000 tons to dock within the harbor. The second-phase project lasted for seven years when the harbor$s moorings were expanded; ...This project was completed in November 1912, when Piers Number 1 through 4 were completed@ (Liu 1996, p. 154). Terry$s guide warns visitors that the @traveler will do well to remember that the port and the surrounding territory, within a 6 3/4 mile radius ... are in the strategic zone, and that photographing, sketching, and making of notes, etc. are forbidden. Cameras are regarded with suspicion@ (Terry 1914, p. 774). Nonetheless, by 1927, Jilong had been named one of Taiwan$s @eight sights@ by readers of the Taiwan Daily News (see wa0261).
