Along the river with its forty-nine bends,_x000D_
I search for the remains of the Six Dynasties along the Ch'in-huai._x000D_
Who walks in wooden clogs after the snow has cleared on the East Mountain_x000D_
And composes poems while the wind roars through the west chasm?_x000D_
One must sympathize with the plum tree's lonely state, forever without companions,_x000D_
Its branches proudly stand, with only a few remaining._x000D_
Blanketing the ground with fallen flowers while spring is not yet over,_x000D_
The plum's sour pit, now still small as a pea, causes men to ponder._x000D_

Mr. Chung-pin sent me at Chen-chou eight pieces of Sung paper and asked for a painting. I recall the Ch'in-huai region where long ago we got together to search for plum blossoms, so I paint this and ask for his instruction. Ch'ing-hsiang Shih-t'ao Chi tao-jen [seals] Yüan-chi; Shih-t'ao. 12 artist's seals, 2 on each of the remaining 6 leaves: Shih-t'ao; Yüan-chi. trans. LYSL/HK/WKH_x000D_
