Wahgi people traditionally make life-cycle payments to their maternal kin, who are thought to have the power to affect the health and well-being of their sisters’ children. In this case, the payment is a large one, since Komblo Village Magistrate Ond Koi, on whose behalf the payment is being made, is an important man.
