Plate with the Arms of Holland
The coat of arms represented here is of the province of Holland, the most powerful and prosperous of the United Provinces. It included most of the major cities: Amsterdam, The Hague, Delft, and Leiden. The Dutch taste for Chinese porcelain created a fashion for commissioning and displaying sets of plates with Dutch motifs, especially the arms of the seven provinces.
Purchased by Philip B. Perlman, Baltimore, [date of acquisition unknown] from Walters sale; by bequest to Walters Art Museum, 1960.
