In some of them, the strakes are decorated with carved designs while others are painted in three colors: white, made from lime, red from lateritic-soil and black from soot scraped from boiling-pots. The carved and painted ornaments on the strakes of the boats differ from village to village. Consequently, the various markings provide an easy way of distinguishing village origin and ownership.
