蘇花公路的前身為清同治年間所修築的「北路」，初時為人行步道。至日治時期日人多次擴建改築，稱為東臺灣臨海道路，於昭和7年(1932)全線開通。(NCL 002417889)

[英文]The road in this picture used to be the north road built during 1862-75. Initially it was a sidewalk. Till Japanese rule in Taiwan, Japanese rebuilt the road several times, and renamed it as Marine Road at the East Formosa. The entire road was open to public in 1932 (NCL).
