[英文]Kusshaku savages of Taiyaru tribe, Farmosa
[英文]This photo was taken in February, 1903, by Mori Ushinosuke 森丑之助. Mori wrote that this photo @displays the outward appearance 容貌 and customs 風俗 of the sub-tribe 部族 (Mori 1918:1, p. 17). @The QuchiKusshaku 屈尺 group 群 of the Atayal is scattered throughout today$s Wulai Rural Township, Taipei County. Shown in the picture is the former dwelling place of the Quchi group. It is in today$s Chung-chih 忠治 village. The Quchi belong to the Seqoleg, a sub-group of the Atayal@ (Masau Mona in Tung 1996, p. 176). A volume of reprints from the Ino Kanori Collection, edited by the Shungye Museum of Formosan Aborigines, contains another shot from this same photo session, with slightly different facial expressions on the subjects. The editors of this volume note the similarities, but date the photo as June, 1906 (it is February, 1903 according to Mori$s own notes). See Nihon jun$eki 1999, p. 113. This same image, colorized, with the Japanese caption intact, was still being reproduced and sold in Taiwan as late as December, 2007, under the imprint: @原味台湾 Aboriginal Peoples of Taiwan@. The back matter on these reproductions is trilingual: @泰雅族屈尺群原住民/タイヤル族屈尺群の原住民/Tayal people.@ The title should read, @2 Kussahku savages of Taiyaru tribe, Formosa@
