2. The Word ‘Kè’ is Now ‘Hakka’
After the Qing dynasty, a large number of immigrants from areas of eastern Guangdong such as Meizhou, Chaozhou, Huizhou, arrived in southern Guangdong where the Cantonese dialect was spoken. They spoke a tongue similar to the Hakka dialect, and conflicted with the native population against whom they competed for arable land and imperial examination places.

- Native population (Punti): Cantonese speaking, native to southern Guangdong. (本地)
- Hakka: Hakka dialect, immigrants from eastern Guangdong (客家)

People who spoke Cantonese call themselves "Punti" (本地) based on their ancestral origin, and referred to outsiders as "Hakka" (客家) which had derogatory connotations at the time. However, this provided an opportunity for unifying the two categories of "Hakka" based on ancestry and on linguistic classifications.
