[英文]One of the @Eight Sights of Taiwan.@ Yao Tsun Hsiung provides an informative backdrop the @eight sights@ moniker: @Although the book $Annals of Taiwan Prefecture,$ which was published during the early Qing Dynasty, listed the $Eight Sights of Taiwan,$ it was felt during the Japanese colonial period that these eight sights were outdated and should be revised. Accordingly, the 1927 $Taiwan New Daily Times$ invited its readers to vote on their choice of the $Eight Sights of Taiwan.$ The chosen spots were Keelung 0195, Tanshui 0088, Mt. Pahsien (Tungshih)0245, Sun Moon Lake 0262, Alishan, Shoushan (Kaohsiung), Oluanpi 0250, and Taroko Gorge 0260. In addition, two of Taiwan$s most sacred sites-New High Mountain (Jade Mountain) 0162, and the Taiwan Shinto Shrine (today$s Yuanshan in Taipei) 0192-were added to the list as $Special Attractions$....Since it was inevitable that a list of only ten beautiful spots would leave out some scenic gems, a further list of $12 Sights$ subsequently came out@ (Yao 2006, p.66). Two of these newer additions were the Beitou Hot Springs 0274 and Mt. Tsugitaka (Xue) 0267, according to the other cards in this collection. Warner$s collection has no scenes from the thriving port city of Gaoxiong, and only one each from Jilong and Danshui, other major harbors. Such an absence is probably due to the strict censorship exercised by Japanese authorities with regards to harbor facility- and airport-images in the wartime era (post-1937).
