臺灣原住民族多為泛靈信仰，相信萬物有靈，族內逝者也會成為祖靈繼續保護庇佑親人。本件文物依據邵族「祖靈籃」形式製作而成，僅為教育展示品，未做祭祀用途，而祖靈籃又稱「公媽籃」。位於臺灣中部的邵族，各家皆會設置有祖靈籃，籃內由下而上依序放置祖先、已逝親人留存之傳統服飾，除祭司外不可讓外人碰觸。舉行mulalu祭典時，各家祖靈籃統一放置祭場內，由祭司一一唱名各家祖先進行祈福、祝禱。
Most of the indigenous peoples in Taiwan hold animistic beliefs, perceiving spirits in all things. They also believe that the deceased continue to watch over their kin as ancestral spirits. This object is crafted in the form of Thao’s “ancestral spirit basket.”
Found in every Thao household, who mainly resides in central Taiwan, the basket is layered from the bottom upwards with traditional garments of the ancestors and deceased relatives. It is regarded as sacred and untouchable by anyone except the priests. During the ritual (mulalu), these baskets are placed on the ritual ground, where the priest calls upon the ancestors by name and prays for their blessings.
