Cigarettes are used in the prison black market as currency, used to exchange for and to purchase items or privileges. Recent research reveals that ramen noodles are now also considered currency in the United States’ prison system, used to purchase other food, soap, or in exchange for laundry service, etc. The image shows a scene in the exhibition, "Anthropologists' Money Bag," by the Museum of the Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica.
