[英文]This postcard was published just after the change in postal regulations that permitted customers to write information other than addresses on the backs of cards--this is the beginning of the @1/3 divided back@ period, which continued until 1918. As the back of this card clearly states, the large part of the divided back was to be dedicated to the address, and the small section for messages to the addressee. This card was issued on October 1, 1907. It commemorates the first population census of Taiwan, which was conducted on October 1, 1905. This island-wide census predated the first complete census of Japan. 後藤新平 Gotō Shinpei is usually given credit for intigating this massive undertaking. He is pictured here (top center), along with the Head of the Police Bureau, 大島久満次 Oshima Kumanji (lower left) and 祝辰巳 Iwai Tatsumi, who served as Minister of Civil Affairs after Goto.
