Open Museum of the Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica (3): A Dialogue Between Anthropological and Indigenous Knowledge, Part 2

Collaboration 2.0: Museums and Indigenous Communities Reunited

In 2020, the Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica, collaborated with the Kaviyangan community of Taiwu Township, Pingtung County, to create the exhibition "Calling the Kaviyangan's Art and Culture: Back to Kaviyangan". In 2022, the Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica, collaborated with the Fata'an community of Guangfu Township, Hualien County, to create the exhibition "Heart to Fata'an". Both exhibitions were limited-time, in-situ collaborations with the communities. In 2023, the Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica, continued to collaborate with the two communities in a "digital collaboration". Through the Open Museum platform, they jointly documented the two exhibitions, and also presented the relevant and voluminous document archives, so that the stories of the two collaborations could be passed down.

The Eyes of Technology: Kaviyangan and Fata'an Collections at the Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica

Through the "Collections" module, we showcase our museum collections of artifacts and field photographs from the Kaviyangan and Fata'an communities, allowing visitors to explore the lives, cultures, and histories of indigenous communities through digital means.

The Voices of the Field: Digital Translation of Guided Tours and Interview Materials

In this theme, we will present a conversation that spans time through the voices of field interviews and contemporary youth. These voices will become the guides for digital artifacts and exhibitions, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the dialogue between the past and present.

The Bonds of "Return to kaviyangan"

The collaboration between MIOE and the kaviyangan community was successfully completed in 2020. The two sides still visited and contacted each other during the pandemic.

Collaboration is a Journey of Companionship

In 2023, the results of the Fata'an exhibition were released at MIOE. The event also explained that the digital exhibition needs to work hand with the community after the physical one ends.
